Powerless Review

Book: Powerless

Author: Lauren Roberts

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Powerless is the first book in the currently unfinished Powerless Trilogy by Lauren Roberts.

This book was originally written, or at least started, when the author was only 18, which is absolutely incredible! We love a queen's dreams coming true, seeing as it quickly became a BookTok phenomenon!

I'm a little late to the party reading this book, but that's the life of a mood reader for you, I suppose. Regardless, this book was amazing! It had, in my opinion, all the aspects of a great dystopian, fantasy type book. It reminded me of so many of my favorite books all mashed into one.

Firstly, Paedyn and Kai. I could gush about them all day long, so I'll keep it short, but I loved their banter and relationship development throughout the book. It was so realistic and believable the way it all came about. Nothing about it felt forced or rushed. If they aren't end game, I'll actually cry.

Secondly. because it needs to be talked about, the King. Can we all agree that he's giving some serious Hitler vibes here? Banishing and killing off the Ordinaries to maintain his Elite Society? If that's not giving mega Hitler vibes, I don't know what does. Seriously such a horrible, dispicable, disgusting man, I wanted to puke and rage everytime he was on the page. Which, in all fairness, is really a testament to the author for being able to create such a hateable character. Good job, Lauren. I'll be sending you my bill for my high blood pressure meds after this one.

Backtracking to Kai for a minute, he's such a complex character. He's basically a giant teddy bear just pretending to be this tough guy, but at the same time, he's also a trained killer and torterer, who's endure plenty of torture himself over the years. And I really can't figure out how he feels about Hitler 2.0 over here. There are times when it seems so clear that he hates his dad (no spoilers as to why, but based on my comparison to Hitler, you can draw your own conclusions), but other times I can't tell where he stands. Is it simply the loyalty, if not love, of a son, or does he genuinly love his father, and possibly even think that he's doing the right thing?

And finally, because I don't want this to go on for too long, I'd like to bring up Kitt. I love him, I love his personality, and I swear on all that is good in this world that I will RAGE if he becomes the new Maven (if you know you know).

Lauren Roberts, thank you for emotionally destroying me. Somehow, I'm really looking forward to book 2, despite the trauma you have caused me!

This is my first, more indepth review, as I'm not writting it on Instagram, but if you'd like an even more detailed, indepth, and spoilery review, let me know!
